Conservation Commission Minutes 02/06/2018
Minutes of the Feb.6, 2018 Meeting of the Old Lyme Conservation Commission

Meeting called to order at 7:35 p.m. Members present were Tom Sherer, George James, Maureen Plumleigh, and Maureen Haseley-Jones
Minutes of the previous meeting were accepted as written.

Several suggestions were made to increase membership of the commission. A list of meeting dates was accepted.

Members were reminded to get sworn in. Commission members voted to have the same officers. The budget figures for this year were duly noted.

A number of suggestions to increase community activities were made.
Tom noted that the school district was well on its way to install solar panels on several school buildings with substantial savings on electrical costs. The Congregational Church’s solar installation has resulted in 42% savings on power. The Commission would like to participate in another round of solar company presentations for the residents of Old Lyme as well as take a first step toward the installation of solar panels on the buildings along Hall’s Road.
Maureen Plumleigh introduced the Commission to Grizzly Grip which is an organic material used instead of salt and sand  during icy conditions. She also made a number of suggestions focusing on partnerships with the Library, the Garden Club, the churches, and hopefully the schools on such matters as pollinators, milk weed seed, pesticides, etc. She also made a brief report on the Rogers Lake Authority and our concern that they act on the recommendations in the Long Term Plan for Rogers Lake which they have adopted. The Conservation Commission wants to assist the RLA in the wide dissemination of this  plan and to review the responses from members of the lake community to the plan’s recommendations.
Maureen  Haseley- Jones will be working on recruiting new members, participating in the Commission’s community activities, assessing the condition of the Commission’s plantings at Rogers Lake, and preparing articles for publication. Tom is to meet with Harold Thompson with regard to our role in the 2020 Town Plan of Conservation and Development.
Meeting adjourned at 9 p.m.    George James, secretary
